Dragging a field to pivot's filters and to rows

Re-Open
Gennady Gandelman asked 4 days ago

Hello,

Sorry if this is a repeat question but can't find the answer. It's possible to define a pivot that contains the same field in both filters and rows. But how does one drag a field to drop it under filters and also under rows? When attempting to, the field gets removed from the other area.

Thank you

Hello, Gennady,

Thank you for your question.

This behavior is intentional. In the Field List, dragging a field between areas moves it. We do not see a clear way to make the same action duplicate the field in a different Field List area without interfering with the regular move behavior. In addition, duplicating a field through the UI also does not add new possibilities. A field in rows can already be filtered directly from the grid by clicking its header cell. Functionally, it does not matter whether the filter is applied from the report filters area or from the grid, since the resulting data is the same. With this in mind, could you describe your use case and explain why having the field duplicated in both areas is valuable to you?

If you still need this setup, you can define the field in both report filters and rows at the same time in the report configuration: https://jsfiddle.net/flexmonster/kgpwj1dv/

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Maksym

Hey Maksym,

Thanks for getting back to me. We like to offer our clients a distinct area containing the fields they can filter on. We're aware that filtering can be accomplished from within the rows but it just makes it easier in terms of usability to know that if you want to filter, you go to the designated area. On top of that, having the separate filters area is necessary because reports don't always have the same fields represented in the rows. Our built-in reports already include fields that appear as filters and rows. Clients are accustomed to seeing it. So when they want to move around the fields in a report to meet whatever their need, they intuitively try to place some field inside the filters and the rows. Not being able to do so generates questions as to why it's "not working". Hopefully this makes sense.

Thank you

Hello, Gennady,

Thank you for the explanation.

For your case, we suggest adding a custom filter area, similar to this example: https://jsfiddle.net/flexmonster/g21vnpkL/

In this sample, the built-in report filter area is hidden, and a separate panel displays a filter button for each field in the rows and columns. These fields are automatically added to the panel whenever the slice changes, so the filter area updates without copying the field from rows or columns into report filters. Also, report filters can still be added, and they will appear in the same common filter panel.

The filter panel is rebuilt in the reportcomplete and reportchange event handlers, which collect the current fields. Clicking a button then opens the filter for the corresponding field via openFilter().

Please let us know if it works for you.

Best regards,
Maksym

Hi Maksym,

That approach can be useful for us potentially. We'll think about it and the example will definitely help.

Thank you for putting it together.
