I am getting too many columns error for classic form

Resolved
Sohan asked on April 22, 2017

I have 56 columns in all (including first two for row dimensions, after some time I get "Too many columns for classic form,Switched layout to compact form" prompt on the screen and layout changes to compact form. Is there a  limitation on number of columns ?
Please refer to attached screenshot of the error.

Hello Sohan,
Thank you for your question. The limitation in the classic view is caused by the growth of the frozen columns. You see this message appears when the frozen columns leave no space for the other cells in the pivot. Such situation usually happens when you put too many dimensions in the slice, or expand nodes and drill down levels of hierarchies in the slice on the grid. The frozen columns take too much space and leave no room for data. In this case, we recommend using compact form, it helps you to show many dimensions and create a large pivot which will fit all the frozen columns and the data. Please let us know if you have additional questions here.
Best regards,
Dmytro.

Thanks Dmytro,
Can you please give us the threshold values i.e. in which situations classic view will not work ?
i.e. how many columns, how many dimensions etc ?

Hello Sohan,
Thank you for your quick reply. The classic view works next way: when it is only three or fewer columns left for the data and all the other columns are frozen then the restriction message appears. It is not directly connected with the number of dimensions. However, the more dimensions you choose for your report the more frozen columns you have.
Please let us know if you have additional questions here.
Best regards,
Dmytro.

Dmytro, I am still not clear with this.  I have only two column dimension i.e. and two row dimension only. I am still getting this message.
Column dimension is Year and Month, and I am expanding and collapsing all pivot in between few times.
Sorry please Can you explain it more ?

Sohan,

You should leave enough space for the scrollable area to avoid this message. It must be the place for at least three columns to scroll otherwise your customers will be unable to scroll grid smoothly.
I can recommend you the following ways to solve the problem:

  1. Increase component's width.
  2. Resize frozen columns to make them more narrow and leave more space for the scrollable area.
  3. Use compact mode for the grid.

Regards,
  Dmytro
